Green Bamboo 17 December 2020

Green Bamboo Vietnamese, Swinger Hill Shops

Wednesday 16 December 2020

Diners

Ron, Kim and Jim

Entrées

Shrimp and crab spring rolls (deep fried) – nice

Rice paper rolls – delicious because the filling was still slightly warm because they were made fresh.  The wrappers were not slightly hard from being pre-made and kept in the fridge

Mains

All of the mains were delicious.  Most of the dishes contained vegetables (eg sliced carrots and lettuce) which was a bonus for us.

Caramelised pork

Beef with Vietnamese mint

Tamarind fish

Accompaniments

Steamed rice

Wine (brought by Jim)

Anderson Methode Traditionelle Shiraz 1999 750mL (a sparkling red wine) – I had a tasted this time – very smooth (despite the bubbles), lovely aroma, very pretty.

Comment – I love this restaurant.  Everything tastes freshly made.  It was not crowded at all – just 2 tables of diners that night.

Ginseng Hellenic 18 November 2020

Present: Jim, Megan, Ron and Jim.  Kim was in Perth, Andrew still in Ballarat and Karen minding the dog.

The occasion was Jim's birthday but he had opted for an Asian meal and not the usual extravaganza but we coped all the same.

The wine, specially chosen by Jim had an intense aroma and flavour with a crisp elegence; rich passionfruit and fresh lively citrus taste

Entree was soft shell crab and duck pancakes.

The chilli flavour in the crab was beautifully understated: the pancakes one of the best for a while (how come all the duck pancakes we have are the best for a while?)

Mains:
Prawns with chilli jam: chilli flavour great, not overhwelming and the mushrooms and snow peas were good

The five spice squid was yum, perfectly cooked

Stir fry lamb  with mint mirin and asian greens was lovely and tender with the mint flavour enhancing it well.

Desserts were mango pudding and icecream and coconut pudding and icecream.

A good evening but as has been experienced before the service at the Hellenic Club leaves something to be desired: They were not really interested in us once we had our mains, dessert had to be pried from them and then at 9pm we were asked to fix up our bill because the cash register was closing.   Bit pushy, we felt like we were being shoved out.  Whatever.

Kinh Do Macquarie 21 October 2020

Present: Jim, Kim, Ron, John, Megan

We ventured Northside again, big move, but we like Kinh Doh, always a good meal.  The restaurant was fairly full, even in times of Covid and there was a noisy group at the front (people having fun) which made it a bit difficult.  However, it was still enjoyable.  They offered to choose the dishes for us, to which Ron said yes at a canter

Entree was spring rolls (boring to nice) and curry puffs (nice, but are they really Vietnamese?).

Mains: Chicken lemon grass: great, it was Kim's favourite: beef and broccoli which was the least interesting.  It had an unusual flavour and the beef was tender.
Sizzling seafood was maybe the favourite as it had a tamarind and peanut sauce, most unexpected and interesting.

The salted chilli eggplant and tofu was not a menu item but made especially for us because we said we liked those ingredients.  Not oily or greasy and someone said the nicest tofu chips they had ever tasted.

Those weak amongst us had mung bean dessert with ice cream and coconut cream which look and apparently tasted delish.
