Ming's Restaurant at Phillip - 4 March 2026

We haven't been to Ming's for some time. It had become very ordinary and not worth going there. We had been informed that it has become much better, so here we are giving it another go.

We happened to end up opting for straight forward, mostly traditional dishes. All were good, with no dish being a particular standout. All the servings were large, so we had quite a bit of food left over. Maybe we should have been a bit more adventurous and ordered from the specials. All the remaining food was packed up by a couple of us and taken home for later.

Dessert was a non-starter, since we were all quite full.

During Lunar New Year, so we had a few dishes that are especially associated with it, plus some others.

There was no special crowd favourite tonight. Everybody loved all the dishes.

Dessert was one custard pancake and one red bean pancake shared between us all. They were both a great finish to the meal. A scrumptious meal all round, worth the trip to the other side.

We had talked about coming here, after Ron and Megan had both been here and given good reports.

The restaurant lived up to expectations.

The entrees were quite special and very different from what is usually offered.

The mains, while more mainstream choices, were really of high standard.

The samosa tower was the favourite of the entrees. The chicken tikka masala was the favourite main course.

All the desserts were great and were a perfect conclusion to the meal.

The restaurant was full. It was pleasantly quiet. The service was top notch.

Kinn Thai in Civic 7 January 2026

A return trip about a year after our first, where we were really impressed. Still incredibly noisy. Mostly because the place was packed, but also from totally unnecessary music thumping in the background.

It may have been familiarity, but we weren't as impressed as the first time. The food was still really good, but the overall feeling just wasn't as good. Service was still really fast, but it was very hard to make clear orders for food and drink - mostly because of the incredible din.

The vegetarian spring rolls were very ordinary.

The chicken biriani was a Thai version of the typically spicy Indian dish. This one was just fried chicken on top of coloured rice and a couple of sauces to add a bit of flavour. Bland and boring.

All the rest of the dishes were superb.

Sticky rIce with mango for dessert, all round.

Everyone said that had a really enjoyable meal.
