Portia's has always been one of our favourites for a long time, good place to go pollie watching on a Wednesday night if parliament is sitting. We were aware that Portia had sold it a little while ago and wanted to see if much had changed.
Andrew is still away on holidays from whatever and Jim couldn't come because Daniel had something on at school. In Jim's absence, we had to settle for a red that was not from the 1990's.
Portia's Place? Hasn't changed much from its previous incarnation, menu pretty much the same, service brilliant, quick, main difference is that Portia is no longer there.
We had our usual entree, Crispy fried duck with pancakes and as usual very nice, tasty, reliable, enjoyed by all.
We wanted to try the Rock Salted soft shell crab because we were disappointed with this dish at the Four Rivers and Ron wanted us to see what it was really like. Well, it was definitely better, but not as nice as Ron's favourite. It was not as oily as 4 Rivers, and John found it too spicy hot, a bit overwhelming.
We decided on three mains since there was only 4 of us. Singapore Chilli King Prawns was nice, Karen really liked it, the coating stopped it from being ordinary.
The stuffed eggplant with prawns was just beautiful, stirfried with other vegetables, very satisfying.
But the Debal Chicken was not impressive. It is normally spicy, rich a cacophany of spices, but this was bland. It was supposed to have lime and shallots, but none of this came through until right at the bottom of the dish.
John enjoyed the meal, but a bit too spicy for him, Ron also thought there was too much chilli (how can you have too much chilli?). His banana spring rolls were fabulous though. My deep fried icecream was yum too, but like all deep fried icecream out of some packet somewhere.
