Lantern Room is where we like to go to when we want to eat upmarket Asian. Their website says its "unique menu is a blend of the local “Nyonya” style cooking layered colorfully with Indian and Chinese influences" and as usual it did not disappoint.
The Ocean trout was lovely, delicate, cleansing, a nice starter. The prawns were a rich contrast, one or our favourites. The fish (chargrilled with pineapple) was disappointing, The hotness was overpowering for some of us. The waiter said it was seczchan pepper, bit we all thought it tasted more like wasabi. The fish itself was dry, it would have been better done with a stronger fish.
The winter salad of mushrooms on some kind of cake was interesting, the two were nice synergy, the bitter and the sweet, the cake was bitter and mushrooms sweet. Some of us thought the satays were a bit ordinary but Ron said they went fabulously well witih the salsa
The beef, also fabulous but better last time: pork spare ribs, very nice, beautiful flavour
The desserts were mixed, the kulfi and panna cotta seemed the best
Ron liked the beef best, Karen the mushrooms: Andrew and John the pork, Jim the beef and prawns. I think I liked the ocean trout best.
Least liked were: Ron, John and Jim the mushrooms; Andrew and Karen the fish.
Lantern Room was good value, but very lively that night (work Xmas functions?). The noise was a bit overpowering. The tasting menu was well constructed, Karen said it was good the way they built up the taste, becoming richer and richer.
